Our Story

Afya na Haki Institute is a testament to a transformative journey that began in 2009, when a visionary circle of African scholars started a critical dialogue on the intersections of health, law, policy, and social justice. These conversations laid the intellectual foundation for a groundbreaking course on health and the law that inspired a generation of multidisciplinary thinkers dedicated to social justice in health to conceive the idea of an academic institution that could train professionals leading to academic awards in foundational sexual and reproductive health (SRH) principles through a distinctly African lens.

Afya na Haki (Ahaki) Institute, officially launched in March 2025, stands on this philosophical and structural premise. Ahaki Institute is a response to the longstanding marginalisation of African voices in health scholarship, the fragmentation of SRH practice into isolated efforts, and the failure of imported models to adequately address the complexity of African lives.

At its core, the Institute exists to transform how SRH is taught, understood, and implemented across Africa.  Through its Bachelor’s and Postgraduate Diploma programmes in Sexual and Reproductive Health, the Institute offers rigorous, interdisciplinary education that merges academic depth with practical relevance in health and social justice. Our programmes are designed to honour indigenous knowledge and to imagine new futures for SRH that are rooted in social justice, equity, and cultural dignity.

Ahaki’s founding vision is an unapologetically Africentric and radically inclusive one that is alive to local realities, cultural contexts, and lived experiences. It seeks to integrate disciplines and bridge the barrier between theory and practice. Its pedagogy is embedded in reflection, community engagement, research, and innovation. In an era where global health agendas too often obscure African voices, the Institute insists that Africa not only speak for itself, but also lead. It champions a future where sexual and reproductive health is not dictated by external agendas but shaped by local insight, research, and leadership. A future where SRH is not simply a technical field, but a human right which is taught with empathy, defended with evidence, and delivered with cultural clarity.

Afya na Haki Institute exists because Africa deserves more than inclusion in global health justice discourse—it deserves to author it. It deserves to define what health, dignity, and justice mean for its people. And it deserves institutions bold enough to make that vision a reality.
